Baseball: Stoffel's stuff helps Grayslake Central blank Woodstock

Clay Stoffel pitched a 4-hit shutout on graduation day, and Grayslake Central's baseball team beat visiting Woodstock 2-0 in nonconference action on Saturday.

Grayslake Central (26-6) scored both of its runs in the third inning, as Brandon Mikes (1-for-3) and Benton Troehler (1-for-2, double) drove in runs. Tony Neuman contributed a double for the Rams.

Stoffel, a senior, struck out nine and didn't walk a batter.

Vernon Hills 14, Oak Forest 0: Michael Moore was sharp in his pitching start for the Cougars, who won the nonconference game in five innings.

Moore threw 4 scoreless innings, allowing only 4 hits, while walking one and striking out five. Caleb Thomson faced the minimum in his one inning of relief, striking out two. Cougar pitchers were supported by errorless defense.

Vernon Hills (11-19-1) pounded out 12 hits and scored 13 runs in its five at-bats. Brendan Holloway led the way going, going 3-for-4 with a double. Thomson, Josh Liu and Ethan Bowers each added 2 hits. Danny Wizceb reached base safely three times.

Mundelein 10, Highland Park 4: Drew Breitenreiter went 3-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and 4 stolen bases, and the Mustangs won the nonconference game.

Ryan Patel (2-for-5, RBI) and Jared Dorfman (2-for-4, RBI) also had multiple hits. Jeff Morton and TJ Yakimisky doubled.

Glenbrook North 9, Libertyville 5: Riley Gowens hit a 2-run homer, and Tim Jean was 2-for-4 for the Wildcats in their nonconference loss.

Griffin Murphy had a double for Libertyville (25-9).

Carmel 7, Grayslake North 2: Lukas Galdoni was 2-for-2 with a home run, 2 walks and 3 RBI, as the visiting Corsairs captured the nonconference game.

Brandon Banker and Jake Adams were both 2-for-3 with a double for Carmel (18-10). Sean Lynch doubled as well. Nolan Taylor earned the win, pitching 3⅔ innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 run, while striking out three and not walking a batter.

For Grayslake North, Nate Marshall was 2-for-3 with a double.

Grant sweeps Lakes: In a pair of nonconference games, the Bulldogs won 10-2 and 7-5 to improve to 22-9 on the season.

In the opener, Carlos Martinez was 2-for-3 with a triple, double and an RBI for Grant. Chase Maifield and Danny Laughery (2 RBI) were both 2-for-4. Nick Malmberg (8-2) picked up the win.

Michael Behrendt was 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI for Lakes.

In the second game, Maifield was 2-for-2, Jimmy Friel finished 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI and 3 stolen bases, and Nolan tripled and knocked in 2 runs. Mikal Ashley (1-0) earned the win.

Lakes got a pair of hit each from Quinn McQuade and Joe Serpilio (2 doubles). Logan Mueller contributed a double.
