Girls water polo: Hersey, Conant clinch spots in MSL title game

Hersey's girls water polo team got the victory it needed to earn a spot in the Mid-Suburban League girls water polo championship matchup.

The host Huskies (19-0, 8-0) prevailed against Elk Grove 10-4 on Monday, giving them a 2-game lead over the second-place Grenadiers in the East Division race with 2 to play.

Elk Grove (12-6, 6-2), having a terrific season, could still force a co-championship, but Hersey has two head-to-head wins in hand and would win the tie breaker.

Leading the Grenadiers were Rachel Ford (1 goal, 5 steals), Alyssa Bonilla (1 goal, 1 assist, 3 steals), Emilia Gibes (1 assist), Kaylee Hatfield (1 goal) and Gillian Guerra (1 goal).

Melena Herrera mde 18 saves for Elk Grove.

Hersey and Conant will contest the overall league championship on Thursday, May 3.

Conant 10, Fremd 6: Conant's girls water polo team clinched a tie for first in the Mid-Suburban West with a 10-6 triumph over visiting Fremd on Monday.

And with two wins over the MSL West's second-place team, Barrington, Conant also clinched a spot in the Mid-Suburban League championship game for a second straight year.

Leading the Cougars' scoring were senior Amy Rodriguez (3 goals), senior Nia Tsoulos (2) and junior Olivia Olszewski (2). Aly Wooley, junior Sarah Erne and Sydney Arnold each added 1 for the Cougars, who raised their record to 8-0 in the West and 19-4 overall.

Senior Lauren Day made 13 saves for the winners.

Sophia Kuehn led Fremd's scoring effort with 3 goals.

Schaumburg 8, Palatine 4 (OT): Junior Kailey Cordova scored 3 goals while senior Lindsey Bach and sophomore Lynda Steen each had 2 as the host Saxons (8-9, 4-4) prevailed in the MSL West match.

Schaumburg scored 3 goals in the second mini-OT session to finally pull away.

Junior Olivia Bugajny added 1 goal for Schaumburg, and senior goalkeeper Magda Jasinka made 16 saves.

Senior Natalia Koval, freshman Maggie O'Brien, senior Nicki Wagner and senior Ellis Nelson scored for the Pirates (2-21, 1-7).

Buffalo Grove 8, Prospect 7: The host Bison came up with a nice win as Dasha Yermol (3 goals) and Katie Wasilewski (2) carried the scoring load in MSL East action.

Prospect senior Colleen Doyle, paced the Knights (9-10, 5-3) in scoring with 3 goals.

She also picked up a nice program record, getting the mark for career steals with 65. That surpasses the number set by Gracie Dix, who had 62.

Doyle made a big dent toward the record by getting a total of 16 steals over the weekend in tournament play at Palatine.

Buffalo Grove improved to 7-11 and 2-6.
