Girls soccer: Barrington, St. Charles North play to draw

Defending Class 3A state champion Barrington played top-rated St. Charles North to a 2-2 draw Thursday night in a matchup of elite girls soccer teams at Barrington Community Stadium.

Senior Michayla Herr gave the Fillies (1-0-2) a 2-1 advantage at the half with goals at 2 and 36 minutes, while North Stars senior Hailey Rydberg scored the first of her two on the night in the 28th minute.

The all-state forward drew the North Stars back even at 42 minutes, guaranteeing that the final 38 minutes would be exciting.

"It was like a playoff atmosphere out there tonight," said Barrington coach Ryan Stengren, who has navigated his young club through a trio of state power opponents to open the 2018 campaign.

Barrington began the year with a 0-0 draw against Naperville North before defeating Neuqua Valley 1-0.

"We've got a long way to go this season," said Stengren, "but we've played well against three of the best teams in the state, including St. Charles North, which is truly a great team."

Buffalo Grove 2, Crystal Lake South 0: The host Bison prevailed in nonconference play with goals from Kendra Lee (unassisted) and from Macy Floro, assisted by Pam Bolis. Jackie Molloy earned the goalkeeping shutout for Buffalo Grove, and the Gators (1-3) got 7 saves from keeper Marissa Fetters.
