Class 2A sectional at Grayslake Central right on schedule

The Class 2A wrestling sectional at Grayslake Central got started on Friday despite some challenging travel for the competitors.

Action resumes at 9 a.m. Saturday, with semifinals slated for 10:30 a.m., semifinal wrestlebacks at 2 p.m., and first- and third-place matches starting at about 3:15 p.m.

At 106 pounds, Lakes' David Becker will meet Crystal Lake South's Christian Olsen in a semifinal.

Antioch's Alex Barbarise will face Crystal Lake South's Peyton Timmins in a 113-pound semi.

At 120, Carmel's Christian Valadez faces Johnsburg's Brad Wizceb in one semi; the other is Vernon Hills' Blake Teschky vs. Wauconda's Evan Husko.

Antioch's Danny McPherson advanced to the semis by topping Notre Dame's Michael Moore, who'd earned a first-round bye, 9-0. McPherson meets Elmwood Park's Joey Giurini in the 126-pound semis.

At 132, Wauconda's Delon Kanari and Antioch's Elijah Reyes both advanced. Kanari next faces Notre Dame's Alex Valenzona, while Reyes meets Marian Central Catholic's Anthony Randazzo.

Carmel's Riley Palm earned a first-round bye and won by fall in his only match of the day, improving to 36-0 at 138 pounds. He next meets Prairie Ridge's Trey Piotrowski.

The semifinals at 145 pounds feature Grayslake Central's Joey Jens against St. Patrick's Tom Godsel and Antioch's Jackie Sistrunk against Grayslake North's Adam Blonski.

At 152 pounds, Lake sophomore Kurtis Smith won twice and earned a semifinal spot against Marian Central's Dylan Connell.

The 160-pound semis feature Grayslake Central's Alex Cramer against Prairie Ridge's Tommy Evans and Antioch's Michael Volkmar against Marian Central's Luke Silva.

St. Viator's Elijah Black added to his strong postseason with a win by fall and next meets Nick Fetzner of Prairie Ridge in a 170-pound semifinal. The other semi is Grayslake Central's Adrien Cramer against Johnsburg's Austin Butler.

At 180, St. Viator senior Jacob Wolf eked out a 10-8 decision to advance to a semifinal against Johnsburg's Justin Peake.

Grayslake North senior Angel Flores won by fall in his only match to earn a semifinal matchup against Liam O'Donnell of Crystal Lake Central at 195 pounds.

Carmel senior 220-pounder John Ivan won his first match by a 3-1 decision and next faces Danny Skold of St. Francis.

At heavyweight, Grayslake North junior Wake Caldero won his only match by fall and will next meet Notre Dame's Gabe Fitzpatrick.
