Girls tennis: West Aurora doubles team advances to semifinals

The No. 2-seeded West Aurora doubles team of Liz Stefancic and Maria Goheen finds itself in the Class 2A state semifinals Saturday after winning both its matches on Friday.

Stefancic said the duo received a wake-up call of sorts in its 6-3, 7-5 win over the Glenbrook North team of Catherine O'Regan and Samantha Frishman.

"That first match was a really big turning point in the tournament for us," she said. "Not that we had to start picking it up, but that we need to make every shot have a purpose. That showed in our match against Hinsdale South."

Stefancic and Goheen downed the Hinsdale South duo of Sylwia Mikos and Aimee Puz 6-0, 6-0.

"We knew we had it in us," said Goheen. "We had to stay confident and composed. To continue on in the tournament we needed to raise our level of play.'

Stefancic and Goheen face the Hinsdale Central team of Sarah Badawi and Kathryn Treiber, a 3-4 seed, Saturday at 9 a.m., at Buffalo Grove in the semifinals.

"For everybody it's been a superfun experience," said Stefancic. "We're having fun and playing good tennis."

The last West Aurora tennis players to achieve a Top 3 finish at state was the doubles team of Liz Moulthrop and Chrissy Ormond, which finished third in 2000. The last West Aurora state-championship in tennis came via the sister duo of Natalie and Stephanie Matko, which won back-to-back doubles titles in 1996 and 1997.

Elsewhere at the state finals Friday, the St. Charles North doubles team of Shelby Thomas-Emiara Saini, which also went 2-0 Thursday, lost their first two matches on Friday and were eliminated.

Elgin's Marta Krakowski was also eliminated from singles play on Friday.

Also eliminated were the Geneva doubles team of Grace Hahn-Jaden Ciesielski and the Jacobs doubles team of Hailey Steinkamp-Kylie Skepnek.

In Class 1A, Kaneland's Piper Schrepferman and Madelyn Jurasek, who each went 2-0 in Thursday's singles action, were eliminated on Friday.
