Boys soccer: Mundelein tops LZ in double OT

Double overtime, double the postseason fun for Mundelein's boys soccer team.

The eighth-seeded Mustangs outlasted No. 10 Lake Zurich 5-4 in double OT in the Class 3A Libertyville regional semifinals Tuesday night.

Mundelein (9-6-3) recovered from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits to force overtime. Once in the extra session, the Mustangs got goals from Armando Rosiles and Jony Lucio, and then hung on in the final minutes.

Mundelein advanced to Saturday's 1 p.m. final against top-seeded Libertyville, while Lake Zurich finished 8-10-2.

"Credit the guys going down 2-nill," Mundelein coach Ernie Billittier said of his players. "We showed a lot of resolve, fight and heart. It was a big sigh of relief at the end. Obviously, (Lake Zurich) was a well-coached team and a young team. They will be a force to be reckoned with these next couple of years."

Mundelein had a two-goal lead with a minute and a half left in overtime. But Lake Zurich scored and then earned two corner kicks in the last 30 seconds.

"We just had to be smarter in the middle of the field," Billittier said.

Mundelein's Brandon Aguilar drilled a shot into the corner of the net in the 65th minute, tying the score at 3-3 and sending the match to a pair of 10-minute overtime periods. Lucio kicked a shot that caromed off the crossbar. Rosiles hustled after the ball and headed it into the goal for a 4-3 lead in the 85th minute.

"I saw the ball come back and my first reaction was to go after it and put it back in," Rosiles said. "Coach always tells us to never give up and play to the last whistle."

Lucio added another goal in the 95th minute for a 5-3 advantage. But Lake Zurich came back with a goal from Andrew Juarez in the 98th minute.

"We made it exciting. We had chances to tie and to win it at the end," Lake Zurich coach Michael Schmitz said. "We gave our best effort and fought to the last second. Unfortunately, we couldn't finish those chances."

Andrew Pytlak led the Bears with a pair of goals. Zak Kaminski also scored.

Bryan Alba started Mundelein's comeback with a pair of goals.
