Boys soccer: Grayslake Central nets playoff win against North

Peder Harvey scored an unassisted goal in the second half, and Grayslake Central's boys soccer team edged sixth-seeded Grayslake North 1-0 in a Class 2A regional semifinal at Lakes on Tuesday night.

Greg Madjarov made 3 saves in earning his eighth shutout of the season for the third-seeded Rams (12-6-2), who advanced to Friday's 6:30 p.m. regional final against No. 2 Lakes.

Grayslake North (11-11) got 3 saves from senior keeper Noel Gonzalez.

"Unfortunately, while we really played well tonight, we simply could not find the touch needed to finish one of our chances early on, and when we made a mistake defensively, a quality Grayslake Central converted," Knights coach Adam DeCaluwe said. "Our boys really gave everything they had and have a lot to be proud of this season."

Lakes 1, Antioch 0: At Lakes, the hosts won the Class 2A regional semifinal, ousting the seventh-seeded Sequoits.

St. Viator 3, Wauconda 1: At Vernon Hills, David Stahl scored twice for the fourth-seeded Lions, who also got a goal from Will Hartman in the Class 2A regional semifinal.

David Ramirez scored for No. 5 Wauconda.

St. Viator will play top-seeded Prairie Ridge in the regional final at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Prairie Ridge 5, Vernon Hills 0: At Vernon Hills, 2 goals apiece from Nicolas Marconi and Noah Smeja, as well as one from Sean Fenton, led the top-seeded Wolves over the eighth-seeded Cougars in the Class 2A regional semifinal.

Palatine 3, Round Lake 0: At Palatine, the host Pirates pulled off the upset in the Class 3A regional semifinal, ousting the sixth-seeded Panthers.

No. 9 Palatine will play No. 3 Barrington in Saturday's 11 a.m. final.

Waukegan 2, Hersey 1: At Carmel, in a Class 3A regional semifinal, the second-seeded Bulldogs advanced to Saturday's 11 a.m. final against the winner of Wednesday's game between No. 7 Carmel and No. 11 Fremd.

Barrington 3, Deerfield 1: Mid-Suburban League boys soccer champion Barrington looked the part of a No. 3 seed after an impressive opening 40 minutes - but the Broncos were on shaky ground after the break before closing out No. 14 Deerfield to advance into the Class 3A Palatine regional final Saturday.

"I know I was nervous, and I am guessing a lot of teammates were probably the same, knowing a loss ends our careers at Barrington," said Broncos senior Gio Guarnero, who helped unsettle and unbalance the Warriors (7-12-3) with a strong first-half attacking effort.

Broncos coach Scott Steib approached this game with his strongest possible starting 11, which was missing, among others, second-leading scorer Michael Blanke. He is lost for the season after suffering a broken foot during the Broncos' shootout victory over Buffalo Grove last week in the MSL Soccer Cup.
