North: Quarterback controversy will dominate Bears' season

Time for some more random thoughts on the Chicago sports scene.

• The 2017 Chicago Bears season will be dominated by a quarterback controversy. The highly paid Mike Glennon is going to start, but the second overall pick in the draft, Mitch Trubisky, will eventually become the starting quarterback of the blue and orange.

• While Mike Glennon has said that "this is my year," he didn't say "I hope to be here for five or six years." That will never happen, yet if he has a great year, it will delay what the Bears really want to do, which is have Trubisky as their starter.

• If the Bears start out 2-5, we know what the chant will be: bring in the second QB! I don't think we can expect much from this team this season, but another guy with his job on the line is head coach John Fox. He has as much to prove as Glennon.

• The Cubs are going on a themed road trip and will be dressed like the guys from the movie "Anchorman." I think it would be cool if they brought some inspiration along like one of the best anchormen of all time, Bill Kurtis, who also appeared in the movie. Why not let him bring out the lineup card? I have no problem with the theme trips that manager Joe Maddon loves to create. In fact, it's probably a perfect time to do it.

• The Cubs are starting to play better, but now it's time for them to dominate.

• I heard Anthony "Booger" McFarland, former NFL player, say on ESPN's "Mike and Mike" morning radio show that football is America's pastime. You can't be successful as a talk-show host without having your own opinions, but baseball is and always has been America's pastime, and the former SEC standout should have that explained to him before he continues his talk show career.

• If the rebuilding plan by the White Sox doesn't work after putting all their chips in the middle when they let go of ace pitcher Chris Sale, then what? If this plan doesn't work, the White Sox are looking at 2022 before the mess is cleaned up.

• The National Hockey League playoffs have been twice as good - no wait, 10 times as good - as the NBA playoffs. Every night you really can't predict what the outcome will be, but the NBA playoffs have been easy to call. Didn't most of us think it would be the Cleveland Cavaliers versus the Golden State Warriors from the beginning of the season or as early as last July?

• The Nashville Predators are the story of the year. If the Preds win the Stanley Cup, their sweep of the Blackhawks will be seen as the beginning of a great run.
