Chicago Fire D Brandon Prideaux to quit after season; plans to coach

Chicago Fire defender Brandon Prideaux announced his retirement at season's end Thursday, saying he will become an assistant coach at the University of Washington.

Prideaux, 32, joined the Fire in 2008. He has also played for the Kansas City Wizards, D.C. United and the Colorado Rapids, logging 220 starts in 240 matches over 11 years. Prideaux has played in seven Major League Soccer games this season, including five starts.

"I've played a long time. It's been a good ride," said Prideaux, who joins his alma mater effective Jan. 1, 2010. "We all wish we could play forever. But we can't."

The decision to retire wasn't easy, but the chance to coach at his former school made the decision a bit easier, Prideaux said. Originally from Renton, Wash., he played at Washington from 1994-1997 under current head coach Dean Wurzenberger.

"I'm a Huskie through and through," Prideaux said. "I'm excited to get back to a program that has meant so much to me. I'll begin my coaching career coaching for the best."

The Fire is 5-2-6, best in the MLS Eastern Conference. The team next plays Saturday at D.C. United.
