Becky, a 24-year-old bison at Lords Park Zoo in Elgin, has died
For the second time this year, a 24-year-old bison at Lords Park Zoo in Elgin has died.
Becky, who has been at the zoo for over 10 years, was unable to get up by herself or with assistance on Sunday. After a veterinary exam, it was determined the animal should be euthanized. The female bison was surrounded by her caretakers when she was put down.
Becky arrived with Drew as a gift from the Brookfield Zoo in Feb. 2013. Drew, 24, was euthanized under similar circumstances in September. Like Drew, Becky will be taken to the University of Illinois to determine any other issues that may have impacted her health.
The National Park Service says bison generally live in the wild for 15 years and as long as 25 years in captivity.
Laura, who arrived in November 2016, is the lone remaining bison at the zoo, which opened in 1895.
A news release from the city said staff discussion is underway regarding bringing a new bison to the park.
