U-46 starts Newcomer Parent Support Group
Elgin Area School District U-46 is launching a group for families who have arrived in the United States from another country.
The Newcomer Parent Support Group will hold its first meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the U-46 Welcome Center, 1019 E. Chicago St., in downtown Elgin.
During the meeting, parents will learn about U-46 and the various ways families can keep in touch with the district, principals, and teachers. They also will gain a better understanding of their role in their children's education and how they can support their children's academic journeys, as well as available helpful community resources. Childcare will be provided.
The sessions will be interpreted in Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, and Urdu. Families that do not speak these languages also are welcome to attend as the district will offer an alternative way for them to engage in the session.
The next two sessions are Feb. 15 and April 17.
The sessions are being organized by the Multilingual and Multicultural Education Department, and questions can be directed through "Let's Talk." Learn more at u-46.org/Page/20045.
