Learn about Our Lady of the Angels School fire at Hoffman Estates event

Historian Jim Gibbons, in partnership with the Hoffman Estates Commission for Senior Citizens, will share a presentation on the Our Lady of the Angels School fire at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1.

The presentation takes place at Hoffman Estates village hall, 1900 Hassell Road.

It makes the 65th anniversary of the fire, which on Dec. 1, 1958 claimed the lives of 92 students and three nuns at the school in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood.

The deadly blaze led to major improvements in standards for school design and fire safety codes.

Admission to the presentation is free, but registration is required by calling (847) 781-2606.

Light refreshments will be served and nonperishable food items for donation to local food pantries will be accepted at the door.
