Aurora fire leaves 37-year-old man in critical condition

A 37-year-old man remains in critical condition following a house fire Monday in Aurora.

Firefighters responded around 7 p.m. to a house fire in the 700 block of Lafayette Street. When they arrived, flames were visible out of a first-floor window, according to a news release from the Aurora Fire Department.

The 37-year-old man was found by firefighters under some debris before they had to exit the home due to low air supply.

One pet cat died in the fire, authorities said. No other victims were found inside the two-story home.

A firefighter was taken to an area hospital and treated for a minor injury, authorities said.

The fire, which took 50 minutes to extinguish, is believed to have started in the kitchen and adjacent dining room area. The home was deemed uninhabitable, and the fire remains under investigation.
