Long Grove carjacking suspect captured after chase ends in crash
A 19-year-old Cicero man was arrested Saturday after authorities say he carjacked a vehicle at a Long Grove gas station, crashed it while fleeing police and then attempted to carjack another vehicle before his capture.
The chain of events began about 11:30 a.m. Saturday when the man, whose identity is being withheld pending charges, crashed a Kia into a gas pump at the station in the 200 block of Robert Parker Coffin Road, authorities said.
The Kia had been stolen in Berwyn, according to Lake County sheriff's police.
After crashing, sheriff's police said, the man approached a 58-year-old Long Grove woman who had been pumping gas and attempted to steal her vehicle. When the woman resisted, the man beat her, pulled her from the vehicle and drove off in it, authorities said.
The woman suffered minor injuries, according to sheriff's police.
Her vehicle was spotted near Old McHenry and Quentin roads by Hawthorn Woods police officers, who attempted a traffic stop. The driver sped away, but crashed less than two miles away near Old McHenry Road and Abby Glenn Drive in Hawthorn Woods, sheriff's police said.
Numerous sheriff's deputies responded to the area and located the suspect on Route 12 (Rand Road) and Old McHenry Road, authorities said. He attempted to carjack another vehicle on Route 12, but its driver had his doors locked and sheriff's deputies captured the suspect.
