Carol Stream police to give seminar on avoiding senior scams

Carol Stream police will hold a seminar next month to help seniors avoid scams.

Seniors will learn how to spot common scams to protect their finances and identity. A police detective who is a specialist in financial crimes will lead the seminar at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 12, in the board room on the second floor of village hall, 500 N. Gary Ave.

Seniors are invited to RSVP to the Carol Stream Police Social Service Unit by calling (630) 871-6280 by Monday, July 10.

Police have warned about "grandparent scams," in which seniors receive a call or text from someone posing as their grandchild. The scammers might say they're in the hospital or trapped somewhere and need money, according to police. Scammers often request funds through Western Union, gift cards, or a wire transfer.
