Learn about dam safety Saturday in Geneva

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is hosting a “Low Head Dam Safety Day” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Old Mill Park, off Route 25 and North Water Street in Geneva.

Low head dams are common across the Fox River and are deceptively dangerous. Often called drowning machines, these dams create a reverse roller current at their base that is powerful and inescapable.

Attendees will learn about low head dams, their hazards, and how you can stay alert and stay safe. Additionally, a paddle craft safety talk will occur at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
