Des Plaines man arrested during shooting investigation in Evanston

A Des Plaines man faces weapons and drug charges after his arrest this week in connection with a shooting investigation in Evanston.

Elkimani Hairston, 41, of the 9900 block of Linda Lane, was arrested early Monday after Evanston police responded to a report of shots being fired from a white Jeep Wagoneer at 12:45 a.m. in the 1400 block of Howard Street, authorities said.

There were no indications that someone was struck or injured.

Officers checking the area located a Jeep matching a witness' description and pulled it over at Howard Street and Custer Avenue, police said.

According to police, an officer observed Hairston reaching under his seat in the vehicle. Hairston was ordered out, but instead attempted to place the Jeep into drive in an effort to flee, police alleged. Officers were able to open the door and remove him from the vehicle, police said.

Police discovered a loaded Lorcin 380 handgun under the Jeep's seat and about 34 grams of suspected cocaine in a plastic glove found in Hairston's sweater pocket, authorities said.

Hairston is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, possession of a controlled substance, driving with a revoked/suspended driver's license, possession of ammunition without a FOID card and possession of a handgun without a FOID card, police said.

Information about Hairston's bond and next court date was not available.
