McDonnell leads Murphy in North Barrington presidential race

North Barrington Village President Eleanor Sweet McDonnell seemed headed to victory Tuesday in her bid for a second term.

McDonnell was leading challenger Jay Murphy 459 votes to 223 votes as of about 9:20 p.m., according to unofficial results. Those numbers gave McDonnell about 63% of the vote total.

Possible public access to the privately owned Honey Lake was among the issues that divided the candidates, both of whom live near the lake.

Murphy, who unsuccessfully ran for trustee in 2019, supported building a boardwalk around the lake or other pedestrian-friendly amenities.

McDonnell said public access isn't possible because the property is owned by the Biltmore Country Club and nearby homeowners.

Neither McDonnell nor Murphy could be reached for comment Tuesday night.
