Des Plaines voters showing support for stronger term limits

Des Plaines voters seem to overwhelmingly favor a ballot question seeking to strengthen the rules for term limits for city officials.

With 36 of 38 precincts reporting Tuesday, 2,528 votes were cast in favor, with only 1,420 against, unofficial results show.

The mayor, the city's eight aldermen and the city clerk would be limited to just two terms in those positions, rather than two consecutive terms. Those officials have been restricted to two consecutive 4-year terms since 1998. Right now, they can run for additional terms after breaks in service, and they can run for other municipal offices.

In November, nearly 77% of Des Plaines voters rejected a proposal to remove term limits for the aldermen and clerk.
