Robots rumble in high school competition

Robots were pitted against each other in a one-on-one cage style matchup during the District 214 Robot Rumble at Wheeling High School Saturday.

Hundreds of engineering and manufacturing students from 11 Northwest Suburban high schools designed and built sturdy, metal-encased remote-control robots to compete in a series of high-impact battles held in a clear enclosure, as spectators watched from the outside perimeter.

"It's like a test of your engineering ability to see (the application of) the skills you learn throughout the year is these engineering classes," said Hersey High School junior Owen Padgett, captain of the team competing with "The Geyser."

"It's a test of how much you've learned, how good your machining is, how good your welding is, and being able to utilize them in a way that's fun for everybody," Padgett said.
