Wisconsin man charged with causing fatal Beach Park crash

Charges were filed this week against the driver who officials said was responsible for an October crash in Beach Park that killed his passenger, Lake County officials said Friday.

A Lake County judge issued an arrest warrant Wednesday for Jeffrey Sprewell, 68, of Milwaukee on one count of reckless homicide and two counts of aggravated DUI.

Sprewell is behind bars in Wisconsin on unrelated charges and will be transferred to Lake County jail when that case is concluded, Lake County sheriff's Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said Friday.

Covelli said the sheriff's Technical Crash Investigations Unit determined Sprewell was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash and presented the evidence to a grand jury Wednesday. The grand jury moved to indict Sprewell on the charges.

The crash happened around 9:10 p.m. on Oct. 16, 2022, on Green Bay Road in southwest Beach Park. Officials said Sprewell, who was driving a Cadillac coupe, crossed the centerline, veered into the northbound lanes of traffic and crashed nearly head-on into a Chevy subcompact being driven by a 31-year-old from Zion.

Anita Parker, 55, of Milwaukee, who was Sprewell's front-seat passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sprewell was hospitalized after the crash in critical condition, officials said. According to a Wisconsin Department of Corrections database, he was imprisoned Nov. 3 and is eligible for parole in May.
