Identity released of Glencoe man police say was punched by his brother until he stopped breathing
It could be several weeks until officials determine the cause of death of the man whom police found unresponsive early Sunday morning after he had been punched repeatedly by his older brother, authorities said.
Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek said her office has ordered tests to determine whether the man, 47-year-old Brandon Biron-Bomis of Glencoe, was killed by the blows or whether the punches caused a medical event that ultimately ended his life.
"At this point both of those options are possible," Banek said Wednesday after her office performed an initial autopsy. "That's why we're doing further testing."
Banek said the tests, which include toxicology, typically take around four weeks to complete.
When Gurnee police officers first found Biron-Bomis at around 1:50 a.m. Sunday at the Gurnee home of his older brother, Kevin Nicholas Biron-Bomis, he was unconscious and not breathing.
Gurnee police said the two brothers had been in an argument earlier on Saturday evening. After driving back to the Gurnee home, they argued again and the older brother punched Biron-Bomis several times until he stopped breathing, according to a Gurnee police news release.
Kevin Nicholas Biron-Bomis, 50, is charged with first-degree murder in his brother's death. A judge set his bail at $5 million Tuesday, which means he would need to pay $500,000 to be released from jail pending trial. He is next due in court Jan. 25.
The case is being investigated by Gurnee police. The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force assisted with evidence collection.
