Electrical malfunction blamed for Elgin duplex fire
No injuries were reported from an early morning attic fire in an Elgin duplex that fire officials say caused $25,000 in damage.
Investigators believe the fire was caused by malfunctioning electrical wiring in the second-floor ceiling light that ignited the attic.
Firefighters were called to the two-story duplex on the 400 block of Columbia Avenue just after 3:15 a.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters spotted smoke coming from the eaves of the duplex.
All residents had escaped safely before firefighters arrived and the blaze was deemed under control at about 3:30 a.m.
Firefighters were on scene until about 4:40 a.m. checking for hot spots and performing salvage operations.
The residents of both units were allowed to return to their homes.
