Naperville Municipal Band celebrates Sousa at Nov. 5 concert

The Naperville Municipal Band will pay tribute to iconic American bandmaster John Philip Sousa during a concert at 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Wentz Hall, 171 E. Chicago Ave. in Naperville.

The concert will be in the Sousa style - the same way Sousa himself organized concerts with his own band as he traveled across America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The concert is on Sousa's birthday - he was born Nov. 6, 1854 - and 90 years after his death.

The concert will feature Staff Sgt. Chris Larios, a soloist from the U.S. Marine Band. In addition to being a concert in the Sousa style, the event will feature some special moments, including a snippet of the actual Sousa band playing his Washington Post march taken from an old Edison wax cylinder, and information about the iconic musician, known as The March King.
