Social media threat leads to school lockdown in Beach Park

Beach Park Middle School went into lockdown Monday after an 11-year-old student posted a threat on social media, according to the Lake County sheriff's office.

At 7:39 a.m. Monday, a student reported to Beach Park Elementary District 3 that a video on Snapchat showed another student sitting in a closet with weapons and saying he was going to bring a gun to school, district officials said in an open letter Monday.

Administrators were unable to identify the student in the video and contacted the sheriff's office, authorities said. The decision was then made to go into lockdown.

The lockdown lasted three hours, and the student who made the threat was identified, authorities said.

Authorities said that the student returned to school Tuesday with no weapons, and the district is taking administrative action.

Sheriff's deputies are referring the case to the juvenile court system.
