Authorities identify man shot by Zion officer

The Lake County coroner's office has identified the man who was shot by a Zion police officer.

George Franklin, 47, of Zion died from multiple gunshot wounds, the coroner's office said.

On Thursday night , Zion police responded an emergency call from a woman who said one of her relatives was trying to break into her home

When two officers confronted Franklin near the home's back door, he pulled out a gun and began to shoot, prompting the officers to retreat, authorities said.

Police said Franklin ran off with the gun before a third officer encountered him about a block away and shot him.

No officers were injured. Authorities said Franklin's gun was recovered at the scene.

Police said the woman who called police had obtained a protective order against the man earlier Thursday, but he had not yet been served with it.

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force is investigating the shooting.
