Aurora man pleads guilty to sexually abusing two relatives

An Aurora man pleaded guilty Tuesday to sexually abusing two relatives.

Michael G. Bishop, 49, will be sentenced on Nov. 22 on two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a child under the age of 13.

He could get probation or up to seven years in prison. He could be sentenced to serve the terms consecutively.

And if he is imprisoned, prosecutors could ask at the end of his term for him to be declared a sexually violent person and be held indefinitely.

A prosecutor told Kane County Judge John Barsanti that in May 2020, the two victims told police in Oswego that Bishop abused them for 13 years in several towns in three counties.

The incidents to which he pleaded guilty Monday occurred in Aurora from 2009 to 2011, starting when the children were ages 9 and 11.

Bishop, of the 1900 block of Sapphire Lane, will have to register for life as a sex offender.

He initially was charged with one count of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child, a felony punishable by six to 30 years in prison, and 14 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

When charges were filed in 2020, the victims asked the Kane County state's attorney's office to publicize that they were related to Bishop to encourage other potential victims to come forward.
