Prosecutor: Man sexually assaulted Arlington Heights woman he met through church

A Chicago man was ordered held on a $15,000 cash bail Thursday on charges he sexually assaulted an Arlington Heights woman with whom he attends church.

Luis Arzet, 36, must post the entire amount to be released from custody while his case is pending. If convicted, he could face up to 12 years in prison.

According to prosecutors, Arzet and his accuser attend the same Des Plaines church. On April 28, the woman invited him to her apartment, where they watched TV while Arzet drank from a bottle of wine he brought with him, said Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Dominica Puglise.

Puglise said Arzet later sexually assaulted the woman. Then he left, telling her not to tell anyone what happened, Puglise added.

The 35-year-old woman called her best friend and told senior members of the church. On May 7, she reported the attack to Arlington Heights police, Puglise said.

Police arrested Arzet on Tuesday. During the investigation, another witness came forward claiming Arzet had nonconsensual sex with her in 2019, Puglise said, adding that accuser is cooperating with police.

Arzet, who does not have a criminal record, is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 9.
