Bigger fireworks and Rick Springfield concert at Elk Grove Rotary Fest

Elk Grove Rotary Fest kicks off Wednesday, for the first time on the fourth weekend of July.

The free five-day festival - at Rotary Green next to Elk Grove High School - was traditionally held over Father's Day weekend and served as the unofficial kickoff to summer festival season in the Northwest suburbs. But organizers and village officials decided to move it to boost attendance and revenue.

The fest is set to get a major lift from the popular Mid-Summer Classics Concert Series with a performance by Rick Springfield at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Live entertainment will include Simply Elton and The Boy Band Night on Friday night, and Mr. Myers, Starlight City and 7th Heaven on Saturday night.

The fireworks display from the canceled July 4 concert will be added to the fireworks show at 9:30 p.m. Saturday, in what officials say promises to be the largest fireworks show ever in the village.
