Shapiro: 'Our community grieves with you, we support you, and we stand by you'

(Monday) our friends and neighbors in Highland Park experienced an unimaginable and senseless shooting. As a community, we extend our heartfelt support to all those who have been and will be forever impacted.

The suspect has been apprehended. We are thankful for law enforcement's prompt action, including police, fire, first responders, medical personnel, and the many heroes in the parade audience.

Working with other agencies, we will continue to provide resources and assistance to the City of Highland Park, while making sure we have necessary resources for our safety here.

Our community has always been resilient and proud. We have always supported one another and will continue to do so. Rest assured, the safety of this Village is always the first concern of mine, the Board and our staff. We can't do it, and don't do it, alone. We partner with our sister local governments, regional communities, and task forces. We also jointly train and communicate with them on a regular basis in order to protect this Village.

To Highland Park: Our community grieves with you, we support you, and we stand by you. Seven innocent lives were taken and many were injured, and even more lives will be forever changed. We are committed to doing what we can to stop these senseless shootings and helping those who are lost before they act out with deadly violence.

Please take time to tell your family that you love them.
