Driver killed in single-vehicle crash in Buffalo Grove

A 63-year-old man died early Sunday from injuries suffered in a one-vehicle crash in Buffalo Grove, authorities said Monday.

Police said the man was driving a silver 2012 Toyota SUV north on Arlington Heights Road at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday when it struck a utility pole, mailbox, a fence and then a tree near Strathmore Court.

The driver and only occupant of the vehicle, identified as Louis C. Matthopoul, was taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, where he was pronounced dead at 2:08 a.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Police identified Matthopoul as a Niles resident, while the medical examiner's office listed him as living in Arlington Heights.

After an autopsy Monday, the medical examiner's officer determined Matthopoul died as a result of multiple injuries from a motor vehicle striking fixed objects. The death was ruled an accident.

Police said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by Buffalo Grove police, the medical examiner and the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team, authorities said.
