Lake County sheriff's police dog tracks down gun linked to criminal investigation

A Lake County sheriff's office police dog tracked down a gun that authorities say a North Chicago man tried to hide after a hit-and-run crash Saturday in Waukegan, leading to firearms-related charged against the man.

Qvousier M. Redd, 24, faces four felony weapons charges and two counts of domestic battery stemming from his arrest after the crash, authorities said.

Sheriff's Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli said Redd was driving near the intersection of Grandville and Frolic avenues about 7 a.m. when he crashed into a tree. Redd attempted to flee but was captured by Waukegan police, Covelli said.

Redd had ammunition on him when apprehended and was believed to have been involved with a crime involving a gun just before the crash, Covelli said. Waukegan police asked that sheriff's dog Boomer and his human partner, Deputy Brian Kilpatrick, search for a gun, Covelli said.

Boomer, a German shepherd trained primarily to sniff out explosives, found a backpack that contained a handgun in a heavily wooded area near where Redd is believed to have fled the crash, Covelli said.

Redd, who remains in custody at the Lake County jail on $250,000 bail, is set to appear in court July 6.
