Fire causes $25,000 in damage to Glen Ellyn building

No one was hurt in a fire in a three-story residential building in Glen Ellyn Thursday night, authorities said.

Lombard firefighters were summoned shortly after 9 p.m. to the building on the 100 block of Surrey Drive in Glen Ellyn, an area that falls within the Glenbard Fire Protection District. Lombard provides fire and emergency response services to residents in the district under a contractual agreement.

A resident called 911 after smelling smoke and coming downstairs to find gray smoke around a closed mechanical room door in the basement, authorities said.

The first arriving Lombard crews arrived at 9:09 p.m. and encountered thick smoke pushing from a lower level vent outside the building and quickly confirmed an active fire in the mechanical room.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, but smoke spread throughout the upper floors of the building. Additional crews assisted in evacuating residents.

The fire was brought under control at 9:22 p.m. Crews brought several large smoke-ejector fans into the building to help with ventilation.

While the fire caused roughly $25,000 in damage, the building remained habitable for all residents. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Lombard firefighters were assisted by Downers Grove, Oak Brook, and Villa Park fire departments, as well as Oakbrook Terrace and York Center fire protection districts.
