Roll call

In a bit of reorganizing at the Township High School District 113 board meeting of May 24, members voted on new officers for a term of one year.

With the exception of one person, all are existing board members whose terms expire no sooner than April 2023.

Ken Fishbain was voted as the new District 113 president of the board, succeeding board member Jodi Shapira.

Anne Neumann was selected to serve as the district's vice president for a one-year term.

The board voted to install Dan Struck as secretary for the board of education.

Ali Mehanti, the district's assistant superintendent of Finance, was appointed to serve as board treasurer.

A collaboration between Township High School District 113 and TrueNorth Educational Cooperative 804, Thursday, June 2, sees the ribbon cutting of the Transition Center at the Shops on Elm Place, 583 Elm Place, Highland Park.

Newly renovated, the space will serve people 18 to 22 years old who receive special education services. They can access instruction, counseling, speech, language and social work services not found elsewhere in the community. Students may also make and eat lunch there and use it as a social space.

A goal is to use a retail space for students to establish microbusinesses; also, the Highland Park Chamber of Commerce and TrueNorth are developing an initiative to create a hiring pipeline for Highland Park employees.

The Transition Center will open this summer, and the microbusinesses coming in the fall.

On Thursday, there are open houses at the Transition Center from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., and from 6-7:30 p.m.

Old Deerfield

The Deerfield Area Historical Society hosts free tours of the Deerfield Historical Village, from 2-4 p.m. Sundays through September.

The Historic Village, at the southwest corner of Kipling and Deerfield roads, includes the Caspar Ott log house, at 1837 the oldest building in Lake County.

It also offers pre-Civil War houses, a carriage house and an old, one-room schoolhouse.

The Deerfield Area Historical Society is a donor-supported, independent nonprofit organization. Its services, like the maintenance of the Historic Village, are done through contributions and member donations.

For more information on the tours and on the Historical Society, call (847) 948-0680.
