Des Plaines S-curve closed for $5.7 million construction project

The stretch of Northwest Highway in Des Plaines that includes the city's infamous S-curve is closed to all traffic until fall for a construction project.

The roadway is shut down between Nicholas Drive and Western Avenue. Access to nearby homes and businesses will be possible through posted detour routes and other alternatives, officials said.

The $5.7 million Illinois Department of Transportation project, which consists of reconstructing and resurfacing the road, installing new sewer pipes, building retaining walls and constructing new ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, is expected to be completed in December

Delays should be expected, and drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
