A 48-year-old Elgin man has been found guilty of sexually assaulting a girl whom he knew, according to the the Kane County state's attorney's office.

A jury convicted Luis Alberto Najera Ayala, of the 700 block of Jay Street, of six counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, authorities said.

Evidence presented in court showed that Ayala had sexually assaulted a female victim under the age of 12 multiple times between January 2017 and February 2022, authorities said.

According to authorities, a school presentation about body safety led the victim to tell her mother about the assaults

Ayala will face a minimum prison sentence of 36 years, authorities said. Additionally, Ayala must register for life as a sex offender.

A judge revoked Ayala's $1 million bond upon conviction, authorities said. Ayala has been held at Kane County Jail since his arrest.

“The victim at the time of this trial was only 11 years old. She showed incredible bravery and strength when facing her abuser in court and testifying about his abuse,” said Kane County Assistant State's Attorney Lori Schmidt. “Many people in our community played a role in obtaining justice for the victim and are owed thanks for their efforts.”

Ayala's next court appearance is July 13.
