With views of Chicago skyline, Greene Valley overlook to open for the season May 7

Take in captivating views of the Chicago skyline from the top of a 190-foot-tall summit when the scenic overlook at Greene Valley Forest Preserve near Naperville opens for the season starting May 7.

The overlook - a favorite weekend spot for birders, picnickers and model glider pilots - will be open Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Oct. 30, weather permitting.

The access drive is off Greene Road south of 79th Street. Visitors can park at the summit and are encouraged to bring binoculars or spotting scopes to see migrating birds. Forest preserve district staff members will be on hand to answer questions.

The district occasionally opens the scenic overlook for special viewings of the sunrise, sunset or a lunar eclipse.

The overlook rests on top of a closed landfill, which operated from 1974 until 1996.
