Round Lake Beach teen airlifted to Lurie after vehicle hits scooter

A 14-year-old boy from Round Lake Beach was severely injured Thursday afternoon after being hit on his nonmotorized scooter by a passing vehicle on Civic Center Way, officials said.

At 3:29 p.m., the boy was riding north of Rollins Road when he entered the roadway and was hit by an oncoming vehicle with the right of way, according to a news release from Round Lake Beach police. Officials say the preliminary investigation shows that the driver was unable to avoid hitting the juvenile.

The boy was first taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville before being transferred by helicopter to Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago. His condition was unknown Thursday night.

The driver consented to blood and urine testing, and police do not believe intoxication or impairment was the cause of the crash, according to the news release. Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County have been requested to aid Round Lake Police in the investigation.
