Fire fighters save teen from burning home in Elgin

Elgin firefighters rescued a teen from the second floor of a burning home Friday morning.

Elgin Fire Battalion Chief Dick Cummings said that when the fire began on or near front porch of the home in the 600 block of Dover Drive, there were two people in the home. When fire crews arrived on the scene around 9:30 a.m. Friday, a woman had escaped the home by jumping from a second-story window. She told firefighters that the teen was inside. Crews rushed past the flames, which were consuming the front of the house, spotted the teen and took them from the home.

Cummings said the teen was conscious when firefighters arrived but likely had not left the house because the front entrance was on fire.

The woman and the teen were hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening, Cummings said.

Fire crews extinguished the blaze after about 40 minutes. Cummings said the home was uninhabitable and likely sustained more than $200,000 worth of damage.

No firefighters were injured while putting out the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but Cummings said it was likely an accident.
