Aurora cop fired after officials say he left threatening messages on teen's cellphone

An Aurora police officer who officials say sent threatening voicemails to a teenager last April was fired after a lengthy investigation, the police department announced Friday evening.

A resident reported to Aurora police on April 24, 2021, that their teenage child had received numerous threatening voicemail on their cellphone. During the initial investigation, officers determined that the calls had come from officer Jonathan Olsen's personal phone number, officials said Friday.

The case was investigated by supervisors from the department's division of investigative services, and soon Olsen was placed on administrative leave.

"It is crystal clear that Jonathan Olsen violated the law and traumatized several people with his actions," Aurora Police Chief Keith Cross said. "Our officers are held to a very high standard and must be held accountable for their actions."

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said because the victim and the victim's parents were satisfied with the disciplinary actions imposed on Olsen, no criminal charges will be filed against him.

This isn't the first time Olsen has been punished for misconduct online.

Olsen's employment was previously terminated in 2017, by former Chief Kristen Ziman, after an investigation into harassing posts Olsen had made online toward women.

Olsen appealed his 2017 termination to an arbitrator, who reduced his termination to a 60-day suspension.
