Objection against Krishnamoorthi's Democratic challenger withdrawn

An objection against the candidacy petitions of congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi's Democratic primary challenger was withdrawn Thursday when its backers were confronted with evidence they'd examined represented fewer than half the signatures submitted.

The objection filed Monday called into question the validity of 671 of 957 signatures on the petition of Junaid Ahmed of South Barrington.

For an Illinois candidate to run for Congress in 2022, 400 valid signatures are required.

But evidence was presented by the Ahmed campaign Thursday that more than 2,000 signatures had been submitted, leading representatives of the Krishnamoorthi campaign to pull the objection.

"We regret that the initial complaint was based on incomplete information and therefore the objection has been withdrawn," Krishnamoorthi Deputy Campaign Manager Brandon Manbahal said. "We look forward to debating the issues impacting the constituents of Illinois' 8th Congressional District in the coming months."

Ahmed became Krishnamoorthi's only Democratic challenger in the June 28 primary when Faheem Mohammed of Plainfield announced he would run as an independent in the Nov. 8 general election instead.

Also expected on the Nov. 8 ballot is the winner of a five-way Republican primary consisting of Chris Dargis of Palatine, Karen Kolodziej of Itasca, Chad Koppie of Gilberts, Peter Kopsaftis of South Barrington, and Phillip Owen Wood of Carol Stream.

Though its borders are shifting significantly for the 2022 elections, the 8th District will remain roughly centered in Schaumburg and include areas of northwest Cook, northeast DuPage and northeast Kane counties.
