Man charged with armed violence in road rage shooting on Elgin-O'Hare Expressway

A Berwyn man has been charged with armed violence in connection with a road rage crash in DuPage County.

Keontae Evans, 20, of the 3500 block of Highland Avenue, is also charged with two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm at a vehicle and one count of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

DuPage County Judge John Kinsella set bail Tuesday at $200,000. Evans will need to post $20,000 to be freed pretrial.

He has been in the DuPage jail since Feb. 8, since prosecutors had asked that he not be allowed bail, according to a news release from the DuPage County state's attorney's office.

At 6:03 p.m. on Nov. 3, 2021, police were called to a single-car rollover crash on the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway near Meacham Road. They found Evans, who was a passenger, and another person.

Authorities say the vehicle was traveling east on I-390 when it became involved in a road rage incident because another vehicle would not allow it to merge.

While the vehicle he was in was behind the other vehicle, Evans fired a gun three to four times at the victim's vehicle, reports said. As Evans' vehicle sped up to get in front of it, Evans then fired another three to four times, breaking a window on the victim's vehicle, according to the release.

When the victim's vehicle swerved toward the one Evans was in, Evans' vehicle veered off the road. The victim continued to drive away.

At the time, Evans was on parole. In addition, he was free on bond on weapons charges out of Cook County, officials said.

Illinois State Police investigated the shooting.
