Round Lake-area woman charged in shooting outside Waukegan Walmart

A Round Lake-area woman has been charged in Saturday's shooting in a Walmart parking lot in Waukegan.

Desteny Rodriguez was charged with armed robbery and unlawful use of a weapon, according to news release issued by Waukegan police.

The news release said Rodriguez's last known address was in Round Lake; the Lake County jail website indicated she lived in Round Lake Beach.

Officers responded about 1:30 p.m. Saturday to the Walmart on the 3900 block of Fountain Square.

Police said that Rodriguez and a man in his 20s arrived in a white Dodge Durango to exchange guns with two other men in their 20s, who were driving a black Nissan Altima.

Rodriguez attempted to rob the men in the Altima, according to police. Shots were fired as both groups fled the scene.

Police said Rodriguez drove the Durango to the Washington and Westwaukee area, where it crashed into other vehicles.

The male passenger of the Durango was struck several times by gunfire and was taken to the hospital in serious condition. Rodriguez was taken into custody by the WPD Patrol Division.

An occupant of the Altima sustained a graze wound.

Police said they recovered two semi-automatic pistols and an "assault-style weapon" in the Durango.

Rodriguez is being held on $150,000 bail at the Lake County jail. Her next court date is Feb 23.

Police continue to investigate the case.
