No injuries in downtown St. Charles fire

No injuries were reported in a downtown St. Charles blaze that kept firefighters on alert late into the night Tuesday.

At 7:45 p.m. St. Charles Fire Department responded to reports of smoke from the rear of a building at 215 W. Main St., according to the department.

The fire level was quickly raised to a box alarm due to the potential damage to the downtown area, authorities said.

Below-zero temperatures caused some equipment to freeze and created hazardously slick conditions for firefighters.

Units from the Batavia, Geneva, Elburn, West Chicago, North Aurora, Fermi, South Elgin, Sugar Grove, Bartlett, and Burlington fire departments assisted in controlling the fire.

The first floor of the building sustained extensive smoke and fire damage. Adjacent buildings also had light to moderate smoke, which was ventilated by first responders.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
