Bail set for five charged after Elgin shooting
Five Elgin residents have been charged in connection with a shooting that sent one person to the hospital early Sunday.
Jesus Canales, 18, is charged with aggravated battery, aggravated discharge of a gun, and aggravated unlawful use of a gun. He also is charged with possession of a weapon without a FOID card, mob action, and reckless discharge of a gun, according to Kane County court records.
Jonathan Alonzo, 19, Isaiah Lafuente, 19, Joselin M. DeLaRosa, 20, and Ilich I. Vara-Morales, 19, were all charged with mob action.
All five appeared in court Tuesday. Bail was set at $300,000 for Canales, $30,000 for Alonzo and $30,000 for Lafuente. De la Rosa and Vara-Morales received personal-recognizance bonds, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office.
Police responded at 4:12 a.m. to the 1300 block of Eagle Road. They found two injured people.
Prosecutors say that after an argument, the five defendants met the victim at a house on Eagle to fight. After firing a 9 mm handgun twice into the ground, Canales hit the victim in the face several times with the weapon. He then shot the victim in the abdomen, prosecutors say.
A bullet fragment ricocheted and hit one of the co-defendants, prosecutors said.
The victim remains hospitalized. The other person received treatment at the scene.
