Arrests made in Des Plaines armed robbery, theft

Arrests have been made in two separate crimes that occurred at Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, police announced.

One was an armed robbery that occurred in October, Des Plaines police said. The other was a theft in August 2019.

Both arrests occurred this past weekend.

Gary Brim, 22, of the 7900 block of South Peoria Street in Chicago, is charged with armed robbery in the more recent of the two cases.

Police said he and an accomplice robbed a casino patron of more than $8,900, his wallet and his cellphone in a parking area at Rivers on Oct. 26. One of the robbers was armed with a handgun, police said.

The victim told police he recognized the man with the gun from inside the casino, and through surveillance video he was identified as Brim, police said.

A warrant for Brim's arrest was issued in November, and he was picked up by Chicago police Saturday after a traffic stop. He subsequently was turned over to Des Plaines police.

The older case involved the theft of more than $400 in chips off a baccarat table. Shenitta Obannon, 31, of Racine, Wisconsin, is charged with theft. Obannon was seen stealing the chips, and authorities were able to identify her through her use of a player's club card, police said.

A warrant for her arrest was issued last week, and she was arrested Friday in Racine. She later was turned over to Des Plaines police.
