Zion man surrenders after two-hour standoff with deputies

After a two-hour standoff, Lake County sheriff's deputies apprehended a Zion man who had barricaded himself in a car early Wednesday morning, authorities said.

Gregory Bradshaw, 33, of the 2700 block of Gabriel Avenue, is charged with two counts each of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon and aggravated assault. Bradshaw also is charged with single counts of resisting arrest and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Bradshaw's bail was set at $100,000 by Judge Raymond D. Collins at a hearing Wednesday afternoon, which means he'd need to post $10,000 to leave jail while the case is pending.

Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Hicks said the car Bradshaw barricaded himself in belonged to one of his girlfriends. Hicks said Bradshaw was using the car to visit a different girlfriend in the Grayslake area when owner decided to retrieve the car.

Accompanied by her mother, the girlfriend saw Bradshaw driving on the 18600 block of West Wright Road and drove in front of him to get him to stop, Hicks said.

Hicks said Bradshaw threatened them both with a gun and drove away. The women called 911.

Sheriff's deputies then spotted Bradshaw driving toward his home and pulled him over, but Bradshaw refused to leave the car, Deputy Chief Chris said.

Negotiators from the sheriff's office talked with Bradshaw for nearly two hours. Bradshaw eventually exited the vehicle and was taken into custody without any use of force, Covelli said.

Police said they recovered a loaded gun and spare ammunition from the car.

Sheriff John Idleburg attributed Bradshaw's peaceful apprehension to the training undergone by his staff.

"Working as a team, they de-escalated a very tense situation and this individual was taken into custody without any deputies being injured and without force being needed," Idleburg said.

Bradshaw is due back in court for a hearing on Feb. 8.
