Des Plaines cops get pay raises in new contracts

The Des Plaines Police Department's patrol officers, detectives, specialists and sergeants will get annual pay raises under 4-year labor contracts approved by the city council Monday.

But starting in 2024, all will have to contribute more to health insurance premiums than they have in the past.

Patrol officers, detectives, specialists and sergeants are represented in labor matters by the Metropolitan Alliance of Police. The sergeants have a separate negotiating group from the others, however, and a separate contract.

Seventy-eight patrol officers, detectives and specialists are covered by one pact. Specialists include canine officers, school liaison officers and evidence technicians.

Eleven sergeants are covered by the other contract.

Both deals are retroactively effective to New Year's Day.

The officers, detectives and specialists will get 2% pay raises this year, 2.25% raises in 2023 and 2.5% raises in 2024 and 2025, documents indicate.

Sergeants will get 2% raises this year and 2.5% raises in each of the three years that follow.

The new starting base salary for patrol officers will be $77,586, documents indicate. Specialists will start at $81,485 annually, detectives will start at $82,629 annually and sergeants will start at $122,866 annually.

For all the employees, contributions to health care premiums will remain at 7% for 2022 and 2023. In 2024, the contribution percentage will increase to 10%, and it'll be 10% in 2025, too, documents indicate.

Negotiations began with the officers union began in June and the sergeants union in November, documents indicate.

City spokeswoman Jennie Vana described the talks as "collaborative." Both labor groups have approved the pacts, too, documents show.
