'Gorgeous' morning greets hikers at Barrington Hills nature center

It was well below freezing, occasionally overcast and the ground was still slick and wet with the previous day's snow, but for Cathy Shike of Hoffman Estates, it all added up to "gorgeous."

Shike and other hearty nature lovers trekked out to Crabtree Nature Center in Barrington Hills on Sunday morning for the New Year's Wellness Walk along the preserve's wooded trails.

"I think it just restores the soul," said hiker Ellen Ward of Barrington. "It's beautiful to spend time outside."

For Tinaz Sevak of Buffalo Grove, who took to the trails with her two-year-old son, Kirsh, in a jogging stroller, it was a chance to get off to a good start on her New Year's resolution to be more active.

"I love it, fresh air," she said.
