Mundelein student charged after online threat hoax

A Mundelein High School student who made false threats on social media against the school community was charged with disorderly conduct Thursday, authorities said.

School administrators and Mundelein police determined the threats weren't credible but detained the student for questioning. School activities continued as scheduled. The student eventually was released to parental custody.

Another student brought the threats to administrators' attention, said Kevin Myers, superintendent of District 75 and District 120. Myers encouraged parents to speak with their children about the seriousness of the case and help them to understand online threats won't be tolerated. Students should also report suspicious activities, threats or other disturbing information to trusted adults, he said.

"Students also need to be aware that law enforcement agencies are taking these threats very seriously and are pursuing prosecution even when such incidents are intended as pranks," Myers said.
